Sicily, just of the coast of southern Italy, is the largest island in the Mediterranean. The Strait of Messina separates it from the mainland Italy. Sicily consists of nine provinces: Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Siracusa, Ragusa, Trapani and the regional capital, Palermo. A long history of invasion has resulted in a mixture of Greek, Arab, Roman and Norman architecture, landscape and culture, and has blended to make Sicily a particularly unique holiday destination.

Sicily's top holiday destination is Taormina, a smart and fashionable resort with beaches close at hand. Taormina also boasts a Greek theatre and a popular film festival. Palermo is one of Italy's largest cities and is busy and chaotic but with interesting sights. In the southeast is the charming Baroque city of Catania. Syracuse (or Siracusa) was an important Greek town and home to Archimedes. Its Greek theatre is still used and plays are performed each summer. Other holiday resorts include Castelmola, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni. Catania Airport on the island's eastern coast is the main entry point for holiday flights.
