The Rites of Holy Week in Iglesias, celebrated uninterruptedly since 1600’s, testify to the Spanish influence on the culture of the city. The celebrations begin Tuesday before Easter, with the procession of the Misteri. Thursday, after sunset, the Addolorata procession takes place. The most anticipated of the processions in on Holy Friday, which depicts in a rich and pompous baroque atmosphere the funeral of Jesus in a splendid simulacrum of the 17th century, accompanied by a long parade of characters in Spanish costumes. The Easter celebrations continue with the Easter Sunday Procession and conclude with a last procession on Tuesday following Easter. All celebrations are distinguished by the craftsmanship of the costumes, the sacred images and the dramatization of the ancient Spanish rites.
