Last Minute September in Sicily
Our September Itinerary: THE SUN-DRENCHED ISLAND of Sicily derives its rich culture not from the mainland but from the parade of Mediterranean powers that ruled its shores for the last two millennia. Beautiful Sicily still remains on the periphery of Europe, a world all its own.
We explore exquisite settings like the deeply rustic Madonie Mountains, hiking in the "true" Sicily of tiny mountain villages and traditional farms, and we ferry to the fabled Aeolian Islands, home of Aeolus, king of the winds, for spectacular hikes with views of legendary islands like Stromboli and Vulcano, jutting out of a crystal-clear sea. From enchanting Taormina, with its flower-draped villas and ancient Greek theater, we hike the slopes below the graceful cone of Mt. Etna.
No journey to Sicily is complete without visiting ancient Siracusa, and we explore its staggering wealth of Greek and Roman monuments, a testament to Sicily's rich cultural heritage.
